Precision Investment Casting
Investment casting is one of the oldest known metalworking processes in existence. Beginning more than 5,000 years ago as "lost wax investment casting" the historical process used bee's wax to form a pattern which was then used to create various components and products.
Fast forward to today, thousands of years later and the science remains the same. However, investment casting foundries all over the world have introduced new innovations such as high-tech waxes, advanced refractory materials, and the many advances made possible by computers and computer aided design.
Similar to the results of our ancient ancestors when they did it, casting provides unparalleled accuracy, repeatability, and quality -- this makes the investment casting of small parts and large parts in high quality alloys a fantastic alternative to other less precise fabricating methods.
The Investment Casting Process: An Overview
Design
The investment casting process begins with a design. This can be a drawing or an existing prototype part.
Mold Making The next step is mold making. From a drawing, design, or prototype the investment casting foundry produces an injection mold. This wax pattern injection mold is then machined using computer assisted design and/or computer aided manufacturing, a marriage of both ancient science and cutting edge technology.

Wax Pattern Assembly
Multiple wax pattern injection molds are assembled on a tree or "sprue" to form the full part.
Coating
In the next part of the process, a ceramic shell or prime slurry is applied to the tree or sprue, coating the wax assembly in a fine ceramic liquid. While the slurry is still wet, it is covered in a very fine sand and then allowed to dry before another slurry and more sand is applied. This is repeated until there are 6 or more layers of ceramic shell on the wax assembly
Wax Removal
Next in the process, the ceramic shells are prepared for the wax assembly to be removed from the inside. This is done with an autoclave, where the ceramic shells are put on a tray and the autoclave uses steam to melt the wax inside the mold.
High Temp Burnout
After wax is removed the ceramic shells are subjected to a high-temperature burnout to cure the ceramic molds. After this process they are prepared for preheating and casting.
Metal Melting and Casting
In this step of the precision investment casting process, high quality alloys are melted in lined furnaces. This step is absolutely critical to ensure the casting quality. Also in this part of the process, degassing and alloying are performed to ensure the melted metal's properties are optimal for pouring. This metal is then cast into the ceramic mold.
Cooling
After cooling, the metal casting takes the shape of what was once the wax pattern. Once the casting cools, the ceramic shell is removed with high powered water jets, leaving the casting foundry with a completed metal investment casting.

Doubts About NWC's New Meters
The NWC has responded to numerous disgruntled customers who have objected to the new billing by rationalising the increases purporting that the old meters have outlived their usefulness and were under-recording the actual consumption. The new meters, according to the NWC, are, therefore, accurate and are reporting the actual water consumption.
On observing the installation crews at work, it was demonstrated by a contractor that the mere blowing of air by the mouth into the connecting pipe causes the meter to move. That being the case, one must wonder at the movements in the meter readings caused by increased water pressure - especially during the early morning - and the pressure experienced after the cessation of water lock-offs.
Ripping off customers
In an effort to mitigate the outpouring of public disgust and charges that the NWC is ripping off its customers, it would be a good idea if these meters were checked randomly by the Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ).

Before installation, batches of the new meters should be checked and certified by the BSJ to ascertain their conformity with international standards. Currently, the BSJ periodically checks and certifies gas station pumps and scales in certain establishments. The NWC meters should be subjected to similar checks and certifications. The NWC customers want to be assured that they are, in fact, billed for what they have actually consumed - no more, no less. The NWC needs to present to the public evidence of the certification of the accuracy of its meters.
Mathematical conversion
Apart from the accuracy of the meters, a mathematical conversion may hold the key to the problem. Since the new meters are recorded in cubic litres, the NWC needs to ensure that the consumer is not being billed for gallons without any mathematical conversion. In short, the NWC needs to assure its customers that they are not being charged a higher rate for cubic-litre readings (new meter) than what they were being charged for gallon readings (old meter) for the same consumption.
Failure to present such assurances will undoubtedly lead to longer lines, increased queries of bills, hostile customer relations and increased alternative water-supply connections. Already, certain NWC customers are chasing away contractors who are intent on installing the new meters.

Beer Bash brewing at THE MACC!
Local and visiting beer lovers will sip into the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului on Saturday, because, well, great minds drink alike!
The third annual Maui Brewers Festival will flow from 3 to 7 p.m., and it's presented by the MACC as well as Maui Brewing Co. and Hawaii Nui Brewing.
"Showcasing the best hand-crafted and imported beers from Hawaii, California, the Pacific Northwest and beyond, Maui Brewers Festival will feature 28 breweries," says Karee Carlucci, the MACC's director of marketing. "Festival attendees will enjoy a leisurely day of sampling along with island dishes from local purveyors.
"Onstage, the entertainment lineup will include some of Hawaii's hottest bands and singers. There will also be logo merchandise for sale by the festival and breweries as tons of prize giveaways."
Just make sure to wear sunscreen and something casual, comfortable and fun. Last year, there was a sea of wild hats, glasses and other fun beer gear.
"I'm really excited to bring craft beer here that you can't normally get in Hawaii," says Garrett Marrero, owner of Maui Brewing Co.
"I want to open your minds to what craft beer is all about. Half of the breweries that are coming don't sell in Hawaii at all. They're friends of mine from all over the country. It's all about quality over quantity. No typical 'green beer' will be represented."
Indulge in, say, Pizza Port as you munch guava chili served in edible tortilla cups garnished with cumin gouda by Who Cut the Cheese. Then quaff Blue Moon and savor St. Louis ribs by Famous Dave's. More than 18 food vendors will be on hand to help you sop up the alcohol. Of course, you must be 21 and older to attend.

Kasto bandsaws used to cut tough alloy materials
In April 2010, the company decided to break into the oil and gas sector by introducing nickel alloys to its product range, as well as some stainless and low-alloy steels.
A separate processing and distribution facility was opened in Rotherham under the name Barrett Nickel Alloys, which offers both stock and bespoke near-net-shape products for customers around the world to forge or machine into finished components.
It decided to install four Kasto bandsaws for cutting the new materials.
The latest model, a Kastotec AC5 automatic bandsaw, was delivered at the end of 2010 to raise production output.
With capacity to process stock up to 530mm in diameter, the machine uses tungsten-carbide-tipped (TCT) bandsaw blades to cut the tough alloys, as do the other bandsaws on site, which offer capacities of up to 660mm.
A hydraulic top clamp was manufactured by Kasto in Germany to Barrett's design to allow more than two round bars of larger diameter to be cut simultaneously; otherwise, there is a risk of the middle bars being forced upwards when the side clamps close.
Keith Fowler, managing director of the Rotherham centre, said: 'We have grown our operation to 14 people in the space of a year, taking on expertise from the oil and gas, aerospace and steel stockholding sectors.
'Many of our staff reported previous good experience using Kasto saws, which is part of the reason we chose to standardise on them,' he added.
There are also many similar machines operating within Barrett Steel Group.
The Kastotec AC5 automatic bandsaw is designed and built specifically to extract maximum benefit from TCT blades.
The machine has a steel-/mineral-cast composite construction that is six to eight times more vibration absorbing than cast iron and a powerful main drive through a rigid, play-free, spur bevel gear delivering 98 per cent of the available power directly to the drive wheels.
Double bearings on both the driven and idle blade wheels promote stable, even power flow and allow band tension to be raised, which translates into higher-accuracy cutting.
Precision is achieved by having blade guides as close as possible to the stock on both sides and maintenance-free linear guides for the hydraulic infeed.
Together with feedback on cutting force, blade speed and position, they provide consistent feed per tooth, irrespective of the ambient temperature.

Other functions of Kastotec AC machines include the automatic slowing of band speed and feed rate during entry and when exiting the cut to prolong blade life, and optional, non-contact deflection monitoring to detect if the band is wandering outside preset limits.
A patented feature involving retraction of the stock and blade on completion of a cut avoids marking the face of the material or cut piece and eliminates the risk of damaging the teeth.
Rest piece length is down to 35mm in automatic mode, allowing users to save thousands of pounds per year through a reduction in scrap levels, particularly when expensive materials are being processed.
